Uganda finally struck gold at the Maputo All Africa Games on Monday night.
Annet Negesa was Uganda’s heroine with a superbly executed run in the women’s 800 meters in Mozambique’s Zimpeto National stadium.
Negesa led from the start to finish on a cool night to take the top prize in two minutes 02 seconds. Following in her wake was Ethiopia's Magistu Fantu.
“I was very focused and fit. I had to get the gold,” said the ever smiling runner who has lso promised a medal in the 1500 meters.
Boxer Ronald Serugo last week became the first Ugandan to win a medal at the games’ tenth edition when he got bronze. Long jumper Sara Nambawa had a similar feat in long jump on Sunday before Edwin Ekiring picking silver in badminton. The netball team could secure gold with one more win today against Tanzania, after they beat Ghana 115-17
Meanwhile Moses Kipsiro has opted out of the 5000 and 10000m double. Kipsiro will now only compete in the 5000m final on Friday. The 10000m final was run yesterday.
