Uganda embraces National ID card registration

national idRegistration officers attended to people at the start of ID registration project at Social Security House Civic Center on Kampala road on April 14th.

Three years after the event at Kololo Ceremonial grounds and 5 years after the project launch in 2009, only 400 identity cards have been made. The initial bill of sh185bn has climbed with over shs240bn spent so far.

In the latest phase, on April 3rd, Minister of state for Internal Affairs, James Baba, flagged off the official start of the registration of all Ugandans aged 16yrs and above. Those are supposed to get National IDs in the first phase which, according to the minister, ends on February 27th, 2015.

When the current mass registration exercise concludes, General Aronda Nyakairima, The minister of Internal Affairs says continuous registration of citizens of all ages will then commence at the sub county level.

Every Ugandan will then be registered upon birth, be issued a unique number, and on clocking 18yrs be issued with an ID card.
